Green iguanas, originally from South America, arrived in Dade County in the 1960s, likely as stowaways or pets. They found a perfect habitat in South Florida's landscapes. With time, they spread north. The growing iguana population, estimated in the hundreds of thousands, causes damage by burrowing, disrupting infrastructure, endangering planes, and harming local flora and fauna. To manage the issue, the Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission permits humane disposal on private and selected public lands without a license.
